Using “Game” management theory to motivate employees

Managers in the corporate world keep coming up with innovative ways of bringing out the best out of their employees, which at times does not work and as the so called best practices start getting common it takes away the effect of extracting same result that one got when it was implemented during the early stages of discovery of that idea.

Employees today expect clearly defined goals, feedback setting of expectations about their performance from their bosses, and one way of motivating this class of young and emerging workforce is to engage them in learning techniques which would trigger the interest factor amongst the so called “Gamer Generation” which even is heavily involved in social networking these days, take an example of an employee who could be very much a Farmville enthusiast, for him as an individual there could be many reasons for him to be involved in this social gaming platform, they do lot of stuff like cultivating crops, buying stuff for their farms, earning virtual money from the harvest, gifting stuff to buddies and so on.

A manager could probably get his team into a set up where he/she could set targets for the team and allow them to earn reward points for attaining certain levels of progress, a lot of companies do adopt this approach of giving away freebies and goodies to employees by throwing in this fun element of being in a game and performing to achieve a target, this can be further enhanced to the model of social gaming phenomenon which has a strong foothold today.

Apart from rewarding the employee, a manager can introduce lot of innovative ways of shaping up employee approach towards handling work and even the quality of work performed, maybe one can try stuff like exchanging of project amongst employees which is kind of slow moving on progress, maybe some employee has lost the motivation to work on it, raising stakes on the reward to be earned some other employee could be raring to go ahead and finish it off in lieu of the reward he/she could be earning on the current project, introduce trading virtual points stuff amongst employees keeping in mind that this game competition spirit helps in finishing of projects on time.
